When Should I take my Dog to the Vet?

Michael Hopkins| Mar 14 2026 18:12

Aside from the yearly check-up and vaccinations, these are some reasons for obtaining immediate vet care for your dog:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Restlessness, panting, unable to lie down comfortably, unsuccessful attempts to vomit, abdominal distension.
  • Seizures
  • Collapse or profound weakness
  • Profuse hemorrhage or major known physical trauma
  • Repeated vomiting and/or diarrhea
  • Struggling to urinate
  • Not drinking or eating once settled
  • Repeated coughing
  • Loss of use of rear legs
  • known exposure to dangerous poisons or foods (chocolate, onion, etc.)
  • Impacted porcupine quills
  • Severe pain--always an emergency! Dog is vocalizing, panting, obviously limping, or exhibiting other symptoms of agony

In our area there are three resources for urgent care or emergency care available. Please call ahead (Enchanted Mountain prefers a text)!
