“Finger Lakes SPCA Receives Thoroughbred Charities of America Grant”

Release Date:  July 12th, 2010

July 2010 -The Finger Lakes SPCA has been selected by the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) as a 2010 grant award recipient.  The SPCA’s grant request was approved as it was found to uphold the mission of TCA which is “to provide a better life for Thoroughbreds, both during and after their racing careers by supporting retirement, rescue and research and by helping the people who work with them”.  The awards are presented annually to eligible nonprofit organizations.

The TCA’s generous award of $5,000.00 will help to defray hay and medical expenses incurred for rescued Thoroughbreds being cared for in the Finger Lakes SPCA’s foster care program.

“This grant award (combined with other generous donations and awards) help to make possible the humane work of rehabilitating and rehoming Thoroughbred horses that were once the victims of extreme cruelty and neglect.  This job is very expensive and demanding.  Sadly, there is a huge overpopulation across the U.S. of unwanted equines partly because of irresponsible breeding.  The economic downturn has also contributed to the rise of abused and neglected horses. People can no longer afford to care for these large animals. These magnificent sentient beings are literally being turned out on the streets, or neglected to the point of starvation”, said Vicki Mosgrove, Finger Lakes SPCA’s Executive Director.   We are grateful for the Mission of the TCA and their support of our organization’s work.

Please call the Finger Lakes SPCA (776-3039) if you would like to adopt or otherwise provide assistance to a formerly abused equine.

World Renowned Trail Ride Critic Dutch Henry's Ride Proclamation for-
Last Lapp Competitive Trail Challenge - Corning NY, August 7th 2010

Howdy Folks,
Therese White and Jennifer Deneka are puttin' on a weekend of family fun complete with trail riddin', campfires, a kiddy scavenger hunt, with a few trail obstacles tossed in. Yes sir, with help from the Finger Lakes SPCA volunteers, they're bringing the American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA) to your back yard!
ACTHA sanctions Competitive Trail Challenges all across the USA - easy going six to ten mile rides with a few obstacles mixed in to test your horse communicatin' skills. Riders and horses are judged as they tackle each obstacle. You can win fistfuls of ACTHA Bucks and other first-rate prizes on ride day - And pile up ACTHA points for you and your horse toward, Year End National and Regional Awards and cash!-With over 500 ACTHA rides scheduled for 2010, point buildin' will be a cinch! Check out ACTHA at www.actha.us http://www.actha.us/ to learn more - like the fact that last year ACTHA has donated over $100,000 to horse rescues and charities! This year's goal is $500,000!
Roll in Friday night and set up primitive camp in the meadow, then mosey over to the Get-To-Know-Campfire. There will be a stack of fixin's for Smore's, lots of story tellin' and if you have a guitar, fiddle or piano, bring it and make some music. Jennifer will be on hand to melt the chocolate. You can arrive Saturday morning too, but don't be late for coffee and pasties at 8AM – Ride Briefing at 9AM. Ride out at 10:00. Be sure to see Jennifer to sign up for the Poker Run…Best hand takes all!
The trail they've mapped out through the magnificent country side at the Lapp farm, is literally, "Over the hills and through the woods to Grandmother's house." Six miles of stunning scenery, with six ACTHA obstacles, so the judges can do their judgin' thing. Therese told me nothing too hard, but just challengin' enough to be fun. And if you want to ride for fun, and not mess with the obstacles, you can do that, too. Sign up as a Buddy rider.
When you ride back into camp, tend your horse, then make your way to the chow line and re-stock your calories while the judges study the score sheets and figure out how to divvy up all the winnin's, prizes and awards. Just for added fun while you wait, Therese will hold a scavenger hunt for all the children under twelve.
Folks this fun-filled event is a fund raiser for the Finger Lakes SPCA, who's volunteers will be on hand helpin' to make sure everything runs smooth. They'll be servin' as judges, runners, and safety riders, whatever it takes. So all you need to do is bring your horse and ride, sing, and have a terrific time! By golly that sounds like a good deal!
For up to the minute info call Therese 607-732-4246 or Jennifer 607-524-6114 or email dontheresewhite@hughes.net.
So brush your horse, load your rig, gather the family and head for the Lapp farm for a great time!
Gitty Up!
Dutch Henry

A huge thank you to our community for their outstanding support of Paws & Pairings!

This benefit raised greatly needed funds for the care of many homeless animals and will support Finger Lakes SPCA’s humane programs which help both animals and people in our County and the Finger Lakes Region.   Additionally, the event raised awareness about our future plans to construct a regional adoption center and humane education facility at the beautiful River’s Edge Farm site in Bath. Open Thank You.
